Save and quit during the rock-spawn animation. When you load back in, the map boundaries can feel broken in all the wrong ways.
How the pile-up actually plays out
Once the setup holds, swim out past the lighthouse and stay clear of the underwater death zones. The safe spot near Pack-a-Punch is the one most players are using, because it pulls enemies into a tight cluster and keeps them out of melee range. It sounds simple, but it saves a ton of stress. Specials get stuck, regular zombies stack up, and you can mow through them at your own pace.
